Using Device Programming to Securely Provision IoT Devices

Devices which are connected to the Internet must be inherently secure from time of birth. A fundamental first step is to incorporate a Secure Element into the IoT Device design. These Secure Elements store important security information such as cryptographic keys and certificates in protected way. They do not share their secrets electronically and are resistant to a malicious third party attempting to physically extract the information.

Secure Elements need to be pre-programmed, or provisioned, in order to be useful and the most secure way to accomplish this is at the semiconductor supplier’s factory or via secure pre-programming equipment.
